I got so fired up I'm now dying to use it in a project. You should find it and check it out. It's truly inspiring. This statement couldn't be more true, "Helvetica encompasses the worlds of design, advertising, psychology, and communication, and invites us to take a second look at the thousands of words we see every day."

Here is some basic info about Helvetica.

Helvetica was developed in 1957 by Max Miedinger with Eduard Hoffmann at the Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei (Haas type foundry) of Münchenstein, Switzerland. Haas set out to design a new sans-serif typeface that could compete with the successful Akzidenz-Grotesk in the Swiss market. Originally called Neue Haas Grotesk, its design was based on Schelter-Grotesk and Haas’ Normal Grotesk. The aim of the new design was to create a neutral typeface that had great clarity, no intrinsic meaning in its form, and could be used on a wide variety of signage.[1]
When Linotype adopted Neue Haas Grotesk (which was never planned to be a full range of mechanical and hot-metal typefaces) its design was reworked. After the success of Univers, Arthur Ritzel of Stempel redesigned Neue Haas Grotesk into a larger family.[2]
In 1960, the typeface's name was changed by Haas' German parent company Stempel to Helvetica (derived from Confoederatio Helvetica, the Latin name for Switzerland) in order to make it more marketable internationally. It was initially suggested that the type be called 'Helvetia' which is the original Latin name for Switzerland. This was ignored by Eduard Hoffmann as he decided it wouldn't be appropriate to name a type after a country. He then decided on 'Helvetica' as this meant 'Swiss' as opposed to 'Switzerland'.

Now help me bring it back!

James

Power Service Diesel-Powered Funny Car Photoshoot with driver John Robinson and the Witherspoon Team

This was probably one of the biggest off-site studio setups I've worked with on a photo shoot. Your logo can't say everything, but it can say something and it should make a statement of who you are and what your product is. I think it was Stan Richards that said, you know a good logo idea when you see the sketch on a piece of paper and it says everything right there in a line drawing. I'm with Stan. When a designer has to go to great lengths to gussy up a logo, then it's probably not working. Let me take a step back, I'm here to say I'm not a master at creating logos, although I do enjoy designing logos from time to time, it's just being in the ad biz doesn't always allow me to have the time it takes to create a truly conceptual logo. Below are some examples of logos that I think nail it, both creatively and conceptually.

10. Bell Telephone Logo - simple, to the point, memorable and you know exactly what they do.

9. Target - Bullseye

8. FEDEX - the only request the client had was that there be an arrow in the design

7. Shell Oil & Gas - Always thought this logo was visually perfect...you can see it from miles away

6. NIKE - The original swoosh, nuff said.

and for more contemporary logos to share

5. Spartan Golf Club - I love it when a designer merges figures together to make a composite that works

4. VOODOO Music Experience Logo - Very dynamic and engaging, it doesn't say music, but it does say voodoo and New Orleans...ie. the fleur-de-lis

3. CHANNEL - Sweet, simple and very high-brow

2.Playboy - says it all

1. ...and now my favorite logo of all time!
I thought this move for Prince was a first of it's kind and everybody knew what that logo mark stood for. It may not be the greatest design, but the statement he made with it was amazing, no words just a symbol...pop culture baby!

Thanks for checking out my blog and hope you guys keep coming back

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Nah, I have a feeling print will never die. Like rock n' roll. There will always be magazines, newspapers and billboards and the Stones. In 2008, 525 magazines died. Sorry, couldn't find a more current statistic. Then there's Newspaper Death Watch...pretty self explanatory.

Below are some of my favorite print work that I think are conceptually amazing. Enjoy!

Guinness
Guinness, the world famous dry Irish stout, owes its fame not only to its distinctive taste, nor to its simple, old fashioned black-and-white logo, but to its modern, creative, humorous and almost always surreal advertising.

Think Small Volkswagon Campaign

Here's the copy:

Our little car isn't so much of a novelty any more. A couple of dozen college kids don't try to squeeze inside it. The guy at the gas station doesn't ask where the gas goes. Nobody even stares at our shape. In fact, some people who drive our little flivver don't even think 32 miles to the gallon is going any great guns. Our using five pints oil instead of five quarts. Our never needing anti-freeze. Or racking up 40,000 miles on a set of tires. That's because once you get used to some of our economies, you don't even think about them any more. Except when you squeeze into a small parking spot. Or renew your small insurance. Or pay a small repair bill. Or trade in your old VW for a new one. Think it over.

Memorex Tapes

Is it live or is it Memorex?

Levy's Real Jewish Rye Bread

Zippo

Disposable just another word for garbage.

Hard Rock Cafe

No copy needed. There are so many people who inspired me over the years that there's no way I can name them all...from designers, art directors, copy writers and creative directors. There have been times when I would say to myself, wow, they do great work. To be honest, these people are the reason I still have the passion to go to work every day and do what I do best, art direct.

Of course, I have been inspired by people I've never met. Advertising celebs if you will. There's one classic art director that comes to mind and thats Howard Gossage. He created the "Pink Air" campaign. Amazing how he turned around a gasoline category and created a huge buzz. Check it out.

And then there's Jay Chiat of Chiat/Day. Chiat/Day went on to create some very memorable advertising campaigns. Their clients included powerhouses such as Apple Computer, Nike and Energizer.

The obvious greats... Jerry Della Femina, Cliff Freeman, J. Walter Thompson, Lee Clow, David Ogilvy...

William Bernbach. "Rules are what the artist breaks; the memorable never emerged from a formula." -- Bill Bernbach

So now I move on to some of the people that I have had the pleasure to work with.

Dee Smith, Creative Director/Copy Writer, Peter Mayer Advertising. Dee gave me my first advertising job. He was old school creative. He had a knack for finding a good idea in the rough during brainstorming sessions. Plus, he was hilarious to work with...a comedian at heart.

Michael Meadows, Creative Director, Peter Mayer Advertising and now a Freelance Illustrator. Mike sat across from me at Peter Mayer. He always kept up on the latest techniques in Photoshop and is a master at Illustrator. He inspired me to not settle for the ordinary...to push the envelope and use photoshop not as a tool, but as a weapon...knock em' dead with your Photoshop skills, haha.

Josh Mayer, Creative Director, Peter Mayer Advertising. There's one thing I always think of when I think of Josh, good work. He always always inspired others to do good work...he knows what good work is and he has a fun time doing it...and he likes P-funk.

Pat McGuinness, Creative Director, a founding partner of Trumpet. I was always amazed at how Pat was able to produce such great work in so little time. It could be a logo or an entire print campaign...he would sit behind his Mac and come out a couple of hours later and, boom, beautiful work. He inspired me to rethink my work. To look at what good work is and what other art directors around the country are doing. Colors, photography, type, you need to make it all come together and tell a story. Less is more.

Robbie Vitrano, Creative Director, a founding partner of Trumpet. Robbie is THE copy writer. Robbie has a facinating way with words. Robbie is a great conversationalist. I can sit for hours and listen to him talk about advertising or branding or even roast beef poboys from Parasols...it doesn't matter. Robbie has produced some amazing award winning work. Check out this commercial he worked on called NOPD, Thin Shoes it's #2.

Michael Rainey, Creative Director, Zehnder Communications. Mike and I went to LSU together. He was always the funny guy in class. It was always fun working with Mike. Besides the fun part, he also knows what good work is and he produces. He loves to brainstorm like a mad man. We did a campaign for the city of New Orleans that still stands the test of time. The tag was, "It's time to care again". Actually, I was a part of a team that did amazing work...there was Henry Chassaignac, Heidi Ross, Shea Duet and William Gilbert...Willy G! oh and Fernando.
Other shout outs to Mark Wilkinson, Julie Gardner, Marcus Dickerson, Bill Johnson, Tom Martin, Mike Tackett, Sloane Berrent and... Justin Hutchison.

After 20 years in the biz, sometimes you just have to reflect on who has inspired you and what keeps you motivated to continue on.

James

20 years in the ad biz: Props to my favorite Commercials

September marks my 20th year anniversary of being an Art Director in the advertising business. No comments on why I like them...I just do. I’ll let the spots do the work. Give me a break, even cats are using the iPad. Cat using iPad becomes Web sensation.

I do realize that everyone has an opinion, but I've been tossing this around in my head as to why people would want to put themselves out there and say things like that. Is it just being cocky, arrogant, I'm smarter than you, I just don't get it.

However, I do also know this. There's this thing called creative destruction. Companies that once revolutionized and dominated new industries have seen their profits fall and their dominance vanish. MySpace? Ouch.

So I had to google fad.

fad - noun - a temporary fashion, notion, manner of conduct, etc., esp. one followed enthusiastically by a group.

It basically means that whatever your calling a fad, it's just a temporary thing and will eventually go away. Some things, it's better that way. Pet rock? Made millions, but very dumb. Sorry all you pet rock fans. Maybe you can bring it back and make another million. Hmmm.

Okay, so I'm going to go out on a limb here and call something that seems to be popular right now a fad. "I think that the Chumby is just a fad". There I said it.

So what do you think is a fad?

James Cooper Ware
Senior Art Director
Witherspoon Marketing Communications
jamescware@sbcglobal.net
twitter
Ask me anything http://formspring.me/jcware88

A Shout Out To The Illustrators

Since being a advertising Art director I've had the pleasure of working with some really great illustrators. However, these days, not so much. There are many factors why I don't get the pleasure. Let's start from the top. Maybe I don't use the medium enough in my own work. That's a good one. Maybe when I do, the ideas get tossed out too quick because of the typical ad biz approval system. Hmm, thats a good one too. Maybe, the budget isn't there, which is usually the case. All reasons aside, I'm going to take the initiative from here on out to include illustrations into my print and web work. There's one thing that is always consistent when I do get to hire an illustrator, it's always a insightful, artistic, inspirational, thoughtful and well, just a plain old fun experience and it always takes my own art direction to a new level.

Here are a few illustrators I've had the pleasure of working with. Michael Meadows Design & Illustration, a very versatile illustrator with many styles and works mainly in Illustrator and Corel Painter. Mark Andresen, his work is rough, gritty, with a woodcut and engravers feel. He even recreated the font Caslon, and I heard singer song writer Prince had once purchased, ha, kinda cool. Robert Guthrie, I haven't worked directly with, but, have worked on projects he's been involved with. His style is all Nawlins inspired. And there's Dr Bob Folk Art, not your typical advertising illustrator, better known for his, "Be Nice or Leave" folk art paintings. He is quite the quintessential New Orleans character, and a freaking hoot to work with. There are other illustrators that I've worked with over the years that I either can't find or they don't have a online portfolio, but these are a few of the best that I've had the pleasure of working with.

Here are a few reference links:
Behance Netowrk
Illustration Web
Illustration Friday
Illustration Works
20 Great Illustrators
Illustrator Biographies
Frucomerci
The Visual Strategist

Credit for work included in this Blog:
NOMCVB Direct Mail, Dr Bob Folk Art, Zehnder Communications
Liquid Ink Octopus, Michael Meadows Design & Illustration

James Cooper Ware
Senior Art Director
Witherspoon Marketing Communications
jamescware@sbcglobal.net
twitter
Ask me anything http://formspring.me/jcware88

2010 Design Inspiration and Challenges

With the onset of social media, designers all around the world are being exposed to each others work like never before. Gathering their favorite fonts, posters, illustrations, paintings, ads, photography, music and videos and pushing them back and forth across the internet like a never-ending tennis match. I've never seen so many incredible designers collected into one place in my life. What place you ask? Twitter. Some of you may say, no sh*t. But seriously, I use it to keep in touch with what's going on around me in the advertising and design world 24/7.

So now that I've got inspiration in the palm of my hand, what do I do with it? I let it inspire me to do better work. Sounds like a challenge to me.

So let's take a look at a few sites that are being pushed to me via Twitter. For fonts, I dig Veer. These guys create some of the most interesting contemporary fonts out there. Plus they have a thing called the Flont that lets you look at what your headline will look like before you buy. For crazy fonts go to Chank. Check out gigposters.com for cool poster art. The designs are just off the hook and very inspiring. For clean design for everything from logos to signage to books check out pentagram.com, they set the design bar so high, I wish I had a month to design a logo. For website design, go to webdesignerwall.com and check out their large format websites will blow your mind. If you have a great idea and want to share it with the world, go to ted.com, a incredible collection of thought leaders and speakers. If you're looking for social media inspiration go to mashable.com, I would have to say he is the social media guru. For online magazines go to issuu.com. For 3D graphics, check out my boys in New Orleans at turbosquid.com. For design feedback check out conceptfeedback.com

Well, that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are thousands of incredible designers, Art Directors, Multi-media and video specialists on the internet and all you have to do is just absord the work and let the creative juggernaut inspire you. If you have any questions just ask me here at my formspring. I hope you find something in this blog that gets you motivated for 2010.

Best,

James

How I Landed My First Advertising Job

So I’ll start off at the beginning. I really wanted to work at Peter Mayer Advertising, located downtown New Orleans. They produced incredible work for the Audubon Institute and Louisiana Tourism and I wanted to be a part of their team.

First off, I knew I had to send the Creative Director, Dee Smith, a clutter buster of a resume that would make his socks roll up and down. While studying design at LSU it was the in thing to send out your resume with some sort of hook. For instance, there was a guy and his name was Mike Montz and he sent out M&M’s with his resume. Dumb, but people like M&M’s so it worked for him. So what was I going to do? Well, I came up with the idea of sending my resume in a bottle, like the message in a bottle. This is because the place I was working at I felt stranded, the typical dead end job. Nice crew, but not my bag. I wanted to be an Art Director! I wanted to create ads! But, I wondered how can I pull this message in a bottle idea off? So I just sort of looked around and made it happen with the resources I had on hand, New Orleans.

First, I went down to the French Market and found this old funky beat up bottle and a cork, of course. Next, I needed to send the bottle in something extremely cool. So I went to the produce section of the French Market and found an old wooden fruit crate, perfect. Then, I drove to City Park and pulled moss from oak trees. Now, I needed to hand draw my resume somehow, to make it look authentic. So I used a quill pen and hand wrote my resume on coffee stained parchment paper and it read something like,”Please RESCUE ME, I’m stranded on an Island called NOPG.” A little heavy handed, but screw it, I was hungry for advertising.

So I had a friend drop the crate off at the front desk of Peter Mayer with a tag that read, To: Dee Smith. Simple, but effective. I was freaking out. Not knowing if he was going to think I was just straight up crazy or genius. Well, all I have to say is, it worked! Dee called me the next day and asked me in for an interview, the rest is history. I landed my first advertising job. Peter Mayer was an incredible place to work, with creative people doing great things. For the first time I felt I was at a place I truly loved and felt inspired to work at. My city helped me do it. Thanks New Orleans, I owe you one.

James Cooper Ware
Senior Art Director
Witherspoon Advertising

Truth and Lies about the Brand Pyramid

One of my favorite quotes is from the great jazz saxophonist and composer Charlie Parker, “If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn.” The truth is, I feel this way when it comes to the brand pyramid. The brand pyramid is supposed to be our stairway to heaven, but sometimes we get so bogged down in the everyday that we put our own philosophy on the back burner.

So the lie is, that if you follow this magical brand pyramid, all of your wishes will come true. This is usually not the case. Well, maybe at first. Okay, so you pitched a new client, showed them your brand pyramid, everybody on the team is beaming, this is the newlywed period, then BAM!!, six months later the message is falling apart.

Let's go back to the last part of that Charlie Parker quote. "They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art." The Egyptian pyramids are made of stone blocks and once put into place, they aren't going anywhere. However, when it comes to the brand pyramid, change in it's foundation is inevitable. Market trends, popular culture, inspiration and audience change over time and we have a personal responsibility to change with it. Our strategy cycles shouldn't be on an annual basis, but in short ebb and flow type movements – creative reviews should take place at least every quarter.

I'm not here to tell you how you should write or design a brand pyramid, because you can just google it and find thousands of articles on it. I don't care if it's in a pyramid shape, circle, rectangle or octagon. Sometimes it takes someone from the outside to say, hey, maybe we should review this message it isn't working anymore. We need not forget our role. We are partners. We lead the way." How our clients see who they are and who their audience is. We need to prioritize what is really going on in the market for the brand and it's customer and turn inspiration into justifiable messaging.

So take a look at your brand pyramid today and see if it still applies to today's rules. I can tell you that it's probably missing the social media part. Just saying.

James Cooper Ware
Senior Art Director
Witherspoon Marketing Communications
jamescware@sbcglobal.net
twitter
